Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, Translated by Barbara Wright
“Ubu Roi” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

7:30 pm, October 3-7, 2017
University Theatre, University of Lethbridge

Sometimes described as an absurdist parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth (and credited as an important precursor to the popular absurdist movement), UBU ROI has been called one of the most excessive political satires of all theatre history.

The play itself ranks with the most original and powerful burlesques of all time. Père Ubu was a mediocre and an unqualified leader and did and said what it took to keep power in his greedy hands.

The play, which takes place in Poland or nowhere, deals with the cruelty of oppressors and the stupidity of the human condition. Translator Barbara Wright says “it is timeless, placeless, and it shamelessly displays what civilization tries hard to hide.”

Box office opens September 1. Tickets at University Box Office (M-F 12:30 – 3:30 pm), phone 403-329-2616, or online ulethbridge.ca/tickets. $18 regular, $13 senior/alumni, $12 students.
