The second-annual Hellz Jezebel Memorial roller derby tournament is coming this weekend. On June 17-18 the Deathbridge Derby Dames will be competing against Alberta and Saskatchewan teams in hard-hitting roller derby action.
This year the tournament will be held at the new west Lethbridge ATB Centre in the Lethbridge Curling Club, with the first game starting Saturday at 9 a.m. Teams include the Deathbridge Derby Dames (Lethbridge, AB), Redneck Betties (Swift Current, SK), East Side Wheelers (Indus, AB), Gas City Regulators (Medicine Hat, AB) , Rocky View Rollers (Crossfield, AB) and the Badlands Hellraisers (Drumheller, AB). There will also be a junior game on Sunday with the Windy City Wipeouts facing the RaRa Riots of Swift Current. Lethbridge residents are encouraged to come see what roller derby is about.
“Our league will have skaters competing at very high levels” says team captain Jamie Franklin (derby name Grayskull). “We love the sport as a team, and push each other.”
The Hellz Jezebel Memorial roller derby tournament honours former Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild member Jessica Olsen (derby name Hellz Jezebel).
“Her strength, humour and beauty were unmatched. We skate for 21,” says Franklin, in reference to Olsen’s jersey number.
The tournament is a double elimination with the bronze and gold games starting at 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday. The Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild will be collecting donations both days in the name of Hellz Jezebel for the Lethbridge Youth Treatment Centre for AHS. There will also be full concession, silent auction and vendor village for the fans to enjoy.
