Lethbridge Public Library Spelling Bee
February 25, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Free
Theatre Gallery, Main Branch
This is for students in Grades 4, 5, and 6
A Spelling Bee is one way for a family to learn and have some fun together. Preparing for the big day often involves parents as well as siblings and grandparents to help with practice, practice, practice. It’s
about reading, vocabulary development and maybe lugging out a dusty dictionary or using technology to double check a word. But a big part of the fun is inviting all your helpers to the competition to cheer – because we know that throwing your hat in the ring for this competition means you’re amazing.
“Lethbridge Public Library is proud to be involved in community literacy events, fostering life-long learning and a love of reading at any age,” says Jenny Cofell, Lethbridge Public Library Librarian, Children’s Services. This year the Lethbridge Public Library will once again be hosting Spelling Bees and we hope the community will come to
cheer the spellers to victory!”
There are still openings for participants to register in the LPL Spelling Bee. Spellers must pre-register online at www.lethlib.ca. They will receive a confirmation email with the Speller’s Guide which will have some of the words that will be used in the Bee.
The winner of each Bee will receive a trophy and a variety of prizes. There is no national Canadian spelling bee so the winner will not advance any further, but they will have the satisfaction of being the best speller in Lethbridge.
Spelling bees provide children with a positive goal to work toward; a forum to display the fruits of their hard work; they also assist children in learning concepts, improving comprehension and developing study skills. The benefits of spelling bees extend beyond language: since children are required to spell words while on stage, they also develop
self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills and the ability to thrive under pressure.
A big thanks to The Engravers for donating the trophies!
