The University of Lethbridge Students’ Union is thrilled to announce YouTube sensation Jenna Marbles as this year’s installment of the ULSU Academic Speaker Series, taking place on February 5th, 2017 at 2:00pm in the University of Lethbridge Gymnasium.
Born Jenna Mourey, she later took her dog Marbles’ name as her pseudonym. Jenna attended Brighton High School in Rochester, New York. Later, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend college at Suffolk University, attaining a B.S. in Psychology. She then attended Boston University and attained her Master’s in both Sport Psychology and Counselling. In March of 2013, Jenna flew to Dublin, Ireland to accept two prestigious awards, the James Joyce award from the University College Dublin and the Bram Stoker Award from Trinity College Dublin.
Jenna currently resides in Los Angeles, California with her two dogs, Mr. Marbles, a Chihuahua and Kermit, an Italian Greyhound. Jenna is not signed to a network resulting in her working completely independently. She releases a new video every Wednesday in which she films, edits and uploads the videos from her home. Her video “How To Trick People Into Thinking You’re Good Looking” had over 5.3 million views in its first week. Jenna’s YouTube channel currently has over 16.5 million subscribers, making it one of the most subscribed to channels on YouTube and the top channel operated by someone independently of a network. Jenna is also the only female in the top channels.
“As part of my campaign platform during Student Union elections, I called for a revitalization of the Academic Speaker Series in order to increase attendance and excitement surrounding dry student programming on campus. Jenna’s event will consist of mediated conversation with a strong focus on her experiences in balancing the pursuit of personal goals while balancing a post-secondary workload.” – Hailey Babb, Vice President Academic
Conversation will also include topics such as her life, career, and creative process. There will be allotted time at the end of the presentation for a Q&A session with the audience.
“We feel that this event is an excellent addition to this years programming and hope to see similar exciting events take place in the future.” – Hailey Babb, Vice President Academic
