For as long as I can remember, my brother has always been my hero.

On June 20, 2018, at the age of 44, my amazing brother Tom passed away suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack, caused by coronary heart disease that he was unaware he had.

He led a very fit and healthy lifestyle, so what happened to him came as a complete shock.

Tom gave so much of himself to the world and never expected anything in return. He had a heart of gold, and would do anything to help anyone. He was hard-working, caring, down-to-earth, and very charismatic.

He was loved immensely by everyone who knew him. He was so positive that I never saw him without a smile on his face. You couldn’t help but smile being around him either.
He had the best sense of humour, and he loved to make others laugh and help brighten their lives.

"Tom was my biggest supporter in life"

When I think of what an exceptional role model is, who has strong character and has achieved many great things in life, I think of my brother.

I’ve always looked up to him, he was my role model throughout my whole life. He was also a mentor to me, and to everyone around him too. After high school, he even coached a little league baseball team.

Tom helped me grow, and shaped me as a person by giving me excellent guidance advice, and setting a good example for me. It was very easy to choose the right path in life by observing him and following in his footsteps. He was the most inspiring, determined, and motivated person I’ve ever known.

"Never be afraid to try,

always believe in yourself,

and you can do anything you put your mind to."

He was so proud of me and was there to celebrate my every accomplishment no matter how big or small. He always encouraged and supported me when life knocked me down.

My brother taught me three valuable life lessons: never be afraid to try, always believe in yourself, and you can do anything you put your mind to.

He always said to me: “I know you can do it, sister. I believe in you. You just have to try, as long as you try that’s all that matters to me.”

Tom was my biggest supporter in life, and was such a positive influence on me. He saw a lot of potential in me, and I can’t thank him enough for that.

He meant the world to me, and I hope he knew how important he was and what a huge impact he had on his loved ones.

If I could see him again and say anything, it would be thank you, for all of the things he taught me and for how he always believed in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without him. No matter where life takes me, I know he will always remain a part of me, guiding me every step of the way.

Even though it is still difficult to find moments to smile, I know he would want me to. The best way I can honour him going forward is to live my life to the fullest in the way that he did, to create a life that I love. My memories of him will never fade and the beauty of who he was as my brother, and as a person, will live on in my heart forever.
