While Stampede-goers from far and wide shell out millions each year to attend the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth*, times are still tough for locals battling a recovering economy. For cowboys and cowgirls looking to kick up their boots and cash in on some western fun, BBB has some tips for tightening the belt when it comes to a budget-friendly Stampede.

“Albertans are still facing the effects of a slow economy,” says Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen, president and CEO of BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay. “While the Stampede is a welcome distraction from hard times, it can be costly. That’s why it’s best for Stampede-goers to have a clear budget in mind before hand and stick to it.”

Wrangle in your budget with these BBB tips:

    • Check out deals ahead of time: Local grocery stores offer deals on ride coupons and wristbands. Certain retailers carry specially marked Coca-Cola products that contain admission vouchers too. Be sure to check all terms and conditions before purchasing.

    • Value Days: Certain days during the Stampede have discounts on admission and sometimes feature free activities including: Sneak-A-Peek (July 6), Parade Day (July 7), Cenovus Family Day (July 9), Canada 150 Day (July 11) and BMO Kids Day (July 12).

    • Bring your own food: While the tasty treats of the midway are tempting, bringing your own bottled water and snacks can help cut costs.

    • Chow down on Stampede Breakfasts: Check out www.stampedebreakfast.ca for Stampede Breakfast locations throughout the city. Most are free, or accept food bank donations.

    • Take in free concerts: Check out the Coca-Cola stage line-up for 10 straight days of Canadian musical talent featuring various artists. It’s free with park admission.

    • Take public transportation. We all know that trying to find parking can be a nightmare, and expensive. Calgary Transit is your best bet for efficient transportation and offers discounted day passes for adults and kids.
