Yard waste sites diverted more than 1 million kg from landfill in 2016, will close for season on November 30

This year, Lethbridge residents have made more than 35,000 visits to local yard waste sites, diverting more than one million kg of organic materials from the City’s landfill.

“The addition of a third yard waste site this year resulted in 5,000 more visits and the diversion of an additional 100,000 kg of yard waste from our landfill compared to last year,” says Tyler Stewart, Waste & Recycling Programming Assistant for the City of Lethbridge. “Organic materials are too good to be wasted in the landfill, so it’s great to see Lethbridge residents making sure those materials get composted in higher volumes this year.”

Wednesday, Nov. 30 will mark the end of the current operating season for the three City of Lethbridge yard waste sites. These sites offer Lethbridge residents convenient places to drop-off organic materials that need not be thrown in the garbage. They operate from the beginning of April to the end of November each year, seven days a week from 7 am to 7 pm. The newest yard waste site opened in June this year in south Lethbridge next to the Lethbridge Soccer Centre to complement existing sites in north and west Lethbridge.

Grass, leaves and garden waste collected at yard waste sites is composted at the Waste & Recycling Centre and used in city parks and planting beds. Composting helps to extend the life of the landfill, reduces the production of greenhouse gases, and allows nutrients to return to the soil for new plant growth. Branches are chipped into wood fibre mulch that is made available to residents at Peenaquim Park on a first-come, first-served basis while material lasts.

From Dec. 1 to Mar. 31 each year, yard waste may be taken to the Waste & Recycling Centre for composting, with no disposal fees charged to city residents on Saturdays.
