The City of Lethbridge will soon be providing dispatch services to regional peace officers following City Council’s approval of a new agreement with Ridge Regional Public Safety Services (RRPSS). This agreement will help improve safety for bylaw and motor vehicle enforcement officers who serve the rural areas surrounding Lethbridge.

Beginning September 19, the City’s Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC) will begin dispatching for RRPSS. This work will include: monitoring radio traffic and providing assistance to officers when requested, performing checks on the Alberta Motor Vehicle Registry System (MOVES), providing police criminal records checks (if approved by the RCMP), noting license plates and locations of vehicle checks, performing a status check within five minutes of vehicle stops, performing status checks when officers book out at potentially high risk situations.

“Bringing in the expertise of our PSCC staff is an excellent way to add another level of safety for officers and public in rural areas,” says Mayor Chris Spearman. “It’s also an opportunity for the City of Lethbridge to foster a new regional partnership, something that is highly encouraged by the Government of Alberta within the new Municipal Government Act.“

There is existing capacity within the PSCC to take on the additional work which will be similar to the services already provided to Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services, Lethbridge Police Services, Alberta Health Services and a number of rural fire agencies.

“The fact that we can do this without any additional resources makes it a natural fit for the City,” says Councillor Bridget Mearns. “Our staff are already trained and experienced in this type of work. This new agreement can also generate revenue for the City that could ultimately go back into other needed programs and services.”

The City revenue from the new agreement is initially projected at $40,000/year and could potentially lead to additional opportunities with other peace officer agencies in the future.

RRPSS operates under the authority of the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General and provide peace officer services for the Towns of Raymond, Magrath, Milk River, the Village of Stirling and the County of Warner No. 5.
