A new self-cleaning public restroom in downtown Lethbridge will be installed this summer to address a pressing need and make downtown a more welcoming place for everyone.

The new restroom will be located along the east side of 6 Street South, just south of 4 Avenue and will be free for all users. The location was one of eight considered in the downtown area and was determined based on 17 site-selection criteria that included distance from other publicly accessible restrooms, access to services, crime prevention through environmental design, aesthetic integration, visibility, proximity to public transit, accessibility and site size. Construction is to begin immediately and is expected to be complete by early September.

“A clean, safe public restroom is a very simple way for us as City Council to help achieve our strategic goal of making our downtown as welcoming as possible,” says Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman. “This new restroom uses the latest technology, and it will address a basic need for all who visit our downtown, including transit users, parents with young children, those who require frequent or quick access to a restroom for medical reasons as well as our homeless or disadvantaged residents.”

The restroom automatically cleans and sanitizes the toilet, sink and floor after every use. Through the site-selection process, administration involved and received support from the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada, local seniors organizations, and the Heart of Our City Committee.

“Having a safe, clean and centrally-located public restroom will provide convenient access to the many downtown employees, customers and clients who utilize our public transit system. By addressing this basic need, the City of Lethbridge will be improving the quality of the downtown experience,” says Ted Stilson, Executive Director of the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ.

The restroom will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. daily, which will make them available to transit riders a half hour before and after regular transit services begins and ends each day.

The site selection process took place over the past year by a staff committee representing seven City departments as well as Lethbridge Transit and the Lethbridge Police Service. Gap and site analyses were done to identify areas of the downtown where public restrooms are unavailable as well as potential locations where one could feasibly be installed.

The total cost of the project is approximately $220,000 and is being funded jointly from existing budgets for the Heart of Our City Committee and Infrastructure Services. More information on the restroom product is available at:
