The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Lethbridge Region (CHBA-LR) and Lethbridge College celebrated the start of the fourth year of The College Home partnership in a ground breaking ceremony on June 20.

Along with local builder Empire Homes, the partners broke ground on the next home to be built by CHBA builder members, suppliers, and tradespeople to benefit the new trades and technologies facility at Lethbridge College. The first phase of the new facility opened to students in August 2015.

In 2013, CHBA and Lethbridge College announced a unique partnership to build homes over five years with proceeds from the sales of each home going toward the new trades and technologies facility at the college. The first two years of the partnership were successful, raising $429,000 through the sale of the first four homes and exceeding the original goal for years one and two. The third year home sales are in the final stages with donation numbers expected to bring the total donation so far to over $600,000.

President of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, Angela Cornforth remarked, “it’s simply amazing. The longevity of this program, the support, the impact. Since the beginning I hoped we would reach our goal but to see it so close to completion in this fourth year; it makes all of the hard work our members have put in worth it. It will be even better to see those students walk through the doors of the new trades facility and know that we had a hand in their future.”

The College Home by Empire Homes will be unveiled this year at the CHBA’s Parade of Homes in Lethbridge, that runs September 10 – 25.

Empire Homes has an important reason for participating this year.

Wes Carroll, Owner, Empire Homes commented, “I’m doing this year’s College Home because I want to show the community that it doesn’t matter how large your company is, you still have the ability to give back and make it better. Even though my business is smaller than others, I felt the need to do this project. I have employed RAP students and apprentices in the past and watching how they learn and absorb what I have to teach them about custom home building is what gave me the push to take on this project. I want to make sure that future builders and trades are taught right and know what quality looks like. I’m also doing this because I believe what we do as trades in the industry is important and it is important to leave a legacy. We create communities and Lethbridge is a leader. Making a mark for future generations so they can say they are proud to work and live here is really important to how the world views Lethbridge.”

Lethbridge College is very excited to once again be a partner in this initiative and is looking forward to working closely with Empire Homes.

“The opening of phase one of the new trades and technologies facility has already provided new opportunities for students, and we eagerly anticipate the opening of the second phase in 2017,” says Lethbridge College President and CEO, Dr. Paula Burns. “To see a custom builder, like Empire Homes, step up for this project is thrilling. It shows that they see the value our facility provides to the training of future tradespeople, builders and industry leaders.”
