On June 20, the new South Recycling Station will open and will provide residents the added convenience of yard waste drop off for composting and mulching. June 19 will be the final day of operation for the recycling drop-off station at the Fairway Plaza location in south Lethbridge.

Located on 28 Avenue South, between the Lethbridge Soccer Centre and the Lethbridge Judo Centre, the new South Recycling Station provides residents with a permanent south side drop-off site for recyclable materials as well as branches, grass clippings, leaves and other yard waste. This change increases the total number of Yard Waste Sites to three in convenient locations across the city.

“In addition to the yard waste component, this relocation of the South Recycling Station offers improvements for litter management, lighting, traffic flow, and barrier-free access,” says Tyler Stewart, Programming Assistant with City of Lethbridge Waste & Recycling Services. “We’re glad we can provide better service to residents with this improved site.”

This relocation is the final step in centralizing all recycling stations, which began in 2012 with City Council approval of the project. The Fairway Plaza Recycling Drop-Off was originally opened as a temporary solution until a suitable permanent location on City-owned land could be found.

While providing improved convenience and service for residents, this project also enables greater efficiencies for City Parks operations, with a new co-located South Parks Depot on the same land parcel. The development of a Parks depot in the south end of the city is important to improve operational efficiencies and staff safety.

In 2015, Lethbridge residents helped to divert from the landfill more than 2,825 tonnes of household recyclables at the three centralized recycling stations, in addition to nearly 1 million kg of organic materials collected at yard waste sites. Congratulations to Lethbridge residents for their continued efforts to reduce waste and maximize diversion from the landfill through recycling and yard waste composting programs.
