A new funding opportunity is now available for Lethbridge-based animal rescue organizations to support non-veterinary costs. The City’s Animal Welfare Committee has established the grant application process which will provide up to $5,000 to eligible organizations. A total of $10,000 in grants will be awarded each year.
Funding is intended to assist with costs related to the care of animals, including: food, shelter structures, litter and litter pans, blankets, toys, fans/heaters, leashes and collars. Successful grant recipients must use the funds within 12 months of receipt.
The Animal Welfare Committee which was established in 2014, acts as an Advisory Committee to City Council on issues relating to abandoned and feral animals in Lethbridge. The available grant dollars were previously approved by City Council in the 2015-2018 budget.
In addition to overseeing the grant application process, the Animal Welfare Committee also oversees a pilot project designed to determine best practices for the management of feral cat colonies. They also provide information and recommendations to City Council.
