For 24 years, United Way has hosted a round of golf that does a lot of good. The planning committee is pulling out all the stops to make the 25th Annual Golf Classic in Memory of John Wichers the best yet.

Since the time Sven Ericksen’s Family Restaurant was passed down to John and Doris Wichers, the Wichers family have been strong supporters of the community through United Way, with son, Brian as a past-president of the board of directors and current co-chair of the golf tournament planning committee.

“We’re proud to be able to recognize the family’s commitment each year – especially this year, through this tournament,” says Kathryn Ponomar, United Way’s Community Development Manager. “It’s a nice tribute and in addition, the funds raised enable us to invest further across the community and help more people.”

Early-bird prize-winner Dave Howe of Schwartz Reliance Insurance says businesses have a responsibility to give back to the community they operate in.

“All local businesses are supported by the people of the community,” he says. “It’s important for all of us to turn around and say ‘Hey, I know there are people struggling. What can I do to help them out and make sure nobody is getting left behind?’ When individual people are doing well, the overall community will do well.”

Howe and seven guests will enjoy a Social Table Experience, complete with guided food, wine and drink tastings, courtesy of Brown’s Social House.

The 25th Annual Golf Classic in Memory of John Wichers will go forward on Tuesday, August 23 at Paradise Canyon. Registration is currently open and a variety of sponsorships are available. For more information, please contact United Way at 403-327-1700 or visit www.lethbridgeunitedway.ca.
