Registration is now open for Symposium Sessions taking place during the Soar Emerging Artist Festival held at Casa, June 1 – 5.
The Soar Emerging Artist Festival is a festival in two parts: The Soar Cabaret Nights and M.A.P.S. exhibition feature works of young artists aged 18 to 35 and runs June 1-4. The Soar Symposium offering professional development sessions for emerging artists of all ages runs June 4-5. Artists can ‘emerge’ throughout their entire lives and it is important to support them in their creative journey. The registration fee is only $25 for as many panels and workshops that can be crammed into two days.
This year’s Symposium is offering three tracks of sessions:
• Getting Down & Dirty – hands-on classes and workshops
• Inside & Out – professional panels and artists talks
• The Reality Check Sessions – practical advice for working artists and arts administrators
In Getting Down & Dirty, Soar is excited to welcome back Green Fools Theatre, which will be giving a circus skills workshop. There will also be workshops in indigenous contemporary dance, stop motion animation and improv skills.
In Inside & Out, one of the sessions will include local musicians John Wort Hannam and Dave McCann offering song-writing mentorship and discussing the experiences of being a songwriter in Southern Alberta. This in addition to panels around ephemeral art, FNMI contemporary art, festival production and film production.
The Reality Check Sessions are pleased to host, Alexander Finbow from Renegade Arts Entertainment (Alberta’s premiere publisher of comics, movies and audiobooks in Alberta), in a session about honing a pitch for publishers and producers. Other practical sessions include tax tips, grant-writing, crowdfunding and social media marketing.
