Ever been stuck wondering what waste goes where? The City of Lethbridge’s new Waste Wizard online tool aims to make recycling less confusing for residents in order to make sure their waste ends up in the right place.
“We’ve all had that moment where you’re holding something and wondering, ‘is this recyclable?’” says Heather Gowland, City of Lethbridge Waste & Recycling Community Initiatives and Education Specialist.
Now available on the City of Lethbridge website, the Waste Wizard online tool provides a one-stop shop for residents looking for answers to common questions about waste. Users can type in almost any household item and receive detailed instructions on whether it should be recycled, composted, or put into the landfill, along with directions on where to take it.
Recycling programs vary widely from city to city, and Waste Wizard provides the right answers for what to do in Lethbridge. Not only does it tell you where items should go, it can also be used to schedule reminders about your garbage pickup or notify you when holiday interruptions affect your collection schedule.
“Residents can type in their address to receive reminders by email, phone call, or text message, which makes forgetting a holiday collection a thing of the past,” Gowland says.
The Waste Wizard tool is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to engage with residents and provide them assistance and quality information.
“It’s not always the prettiest topic of conversation,” Gowland says, “but we want to make sure residents know we’re here to help them reduce their waste, makes sure it goes to the right place, and keep our city as clean, green and beautiful as we can.”
